What stone services does Amen offer?

. Stone is the ideal choice for a low maintenance, timeless, natural look. In exterior spaces it perseveres through Colorado's harshest winters while interior stone can transform a room creating a serene, well-balanced space.

What are the benefits of choosing stone?

. Choosing an experienced and skilled mason can save a client many headaches, namely moisture issues. Some common mistakes made by DIYers or less experienced masons are improper flashing, lack of moisture barrier knowledge and improper installation which can lead to moisture penetration. Essentially when moisture such as rain or snow infiltrates a barrier system behind the stone, it can freeze, expand and break the bond between the stone and mortar causing the stone to fall off. Though this is aesthetically unappealing, a stone falling off is typically easily identified and able to be fixed quickly. Other issues that could be caused by moisture penetration, are mold and erosion. Erosion can even lead to further issues such as termites and even structural damage. At Amen, our masons are well trained on the importance and proper installation of moisture barrier systems to prevent any of these problems for each and every client.

What are the risks of choosing an inexperienced stone mason?

. Stone veneer, also called synthetic stone, is made by pouring a tinted concrete mixture into pre-made molds. It is typically more cost effective and weighs less than real stone. Real stone is a natural material typically cut from rocks, boulders or the ground almost always resulting in a very natural, earthy look.

What are the differences between veneer/synthetic and real stone?

. The possibilities are endless when it comes to stone blends, which can be wonderful for someone with a specific vision. However it can be daunting for someone who is less decisive. Though we do have some general recommendations (listed below), we like to talk with our clients one-on-one to get the full details for each project to provide the best recommendation and most relevant options available. Generally, we recommend pairing cooler colors with varying neutral gray blends whereas we would recommend warmer colors be paired with more earthy browns. And a more modern trend we have seen lately has been pairing a darker blend of stone (blacks and dark grays) with a white contrast. When just starting to look, there are some longstanding stone manufacturers that provide wide selections of stone blends as well as custom options, namely cultured stone, sunset stone, coronado stone, signature stone, el dorado stone and the rock garden. We are happy to provide brochures of any or all brands that you may be interested in. As you narrow your search, we can provide life-size samples for you to take to the project site. We find that it is helpful for clients to see the stone in the lighting at the project site since lighting can have a dramatic affect on the look of certain stone blends. On the other hand, if you would rather pick out the individual stone colors for true customization, we are happy to create a sample based on a blend that you hand pick. If you are looking for another experienced opinion, we can even accompany you to visit a local supplier and help to hand pick the blend.

How do I choose a stone blend for my project?

. Timelines can vary based on a variety of factors, but if the stone is not in stock at the supplier, it typically takes about a month for a stone order to be delivered. Once the stone arrives, our labor times are typically 1-2 days to prepare the surface(s) and about 1-3 days of labor for every 100 square feet depending on the complexity of the blend and application style.

How long does it take to install stone?

. In short, yes, stone can be installed over other surfaces. Stone can be installed over structural block (CMU), full module brick, concrete walls, cement boards, drywall and hardcoat stucco. Surfaces to avoid installing stone over include veneer brick, siding and EIFS stucco.

Can stone be installed over other surfaces?

. Yes, Amen will provide labor for stone already purchased. Though we do ask our clients to keep in mind that we may be able to get contractor pricing with stone suppliers, so this may not always be the best route to take.

Can I purchase the stone myself and hire Amen to install?
